KAREN SOUTHALL

After being told at the tender age of 12 that training to be a Vet would take about seven years, Karen abandoned all hope of curing sick animals and instead turned her attention to journalism (thus becoming a sick animal).

After leaving college she joined local weekly newspaper group, Warrington Guardian series as a rookie reporter which included a day release NCTJ course.

At the age of 21, she was abducted by an alien and young love overriding any career plans she packed her bags and set off to Tenerife followed by a backpacking stint through Europe before heading to Australia for a further two years.

On return to English soil she stumbled into the worldwide gambling industry and was thrust into a new trade publication industry writing news, features and travelling the world covering exhibitions.

But the alien had itchy feet and wanted to move to Spain. So she landed in Fuengirola in 1996 and in the days of early internet managed to continue writing features for the same company.

In 1999 she was approached by a rival magazine to join their team as Features Editor which she did until 2005 when she left to have her first baby.

Six months later when she decided to return to work, a third and new UK based gaming magazine had just been launched and they asked her to join their team as Associate Editor.

G3 Magazine (www.g3imagazine) is aimed at the game manufacturer and operator covering land based and online gaming. Karen’s role is primarily indepth market reports looking at gaming legislation and market statistics alongside product technology reports.

This is a freelance position and she has also written a handful of articles for local publications on the Costa and dabbles in short stories, poetry and song lyrics.

She is a single mum and currently lives in Coín with her two young children, 16 chickens, dog, pot bellied pig, several cats and a hedgehog.
